The decisions that drive the schedule and durability
The shower tray and the porcelain format. The flush-with-the-floor tray is now the standard: mineral-filled resin or extra-slim ceramic, a linear or concealed-grille waste and a 1.5-2 % fall towards the drain. Large-format porcelain (120x120, 120x260 cm) reduces grout lines and is easier to clean, but calls for C2TE-S1 deformable adhesive, adhesive on both surfaces and levelling clips. Wall-hung sanitaryware sits on a frame with a concealed cistern rated above 400 kg.
Hard water dictates the brassware. Hansgrohe thermostatic mixers with limescale-resistant coatings, suited to the local water. Porcelanosa, Roca, Duravit and Geberit complete the specification, with made-to-measure screens and a high-end finish.
Tanking and ventilation cannot be rushed. Flexible cement-based tanking across the shower area and the floor, with reinforcing bands at wall-to-floor junctions and corners and treatment around wastes and pipe penetrations. The 24-48 h cure before tiling is never skipped: skipping it is the commonest error, and a source of leaks. The Spanish Building Code (CTE) requires extraction in internal bathrooms and ambient humidity makes condensation worse: humidistat extractor fans or heat-recovery units clear the vapour and prevent mould, salt deposits and damage to grout and joinery.
A full bathroom usually takes 2-3 working weeks, screed curing and tanking included, with an in-house team on the payroll and a 5-year guarantee on the workmanship; watertightness, drainage and tap operation are tested before handover.
