Kitchen renovation in Mijas: demand across the three zones

Mijas has a mixed market of Spanish and international homeowners, apartments and second homes. In Mijas Costa and La Cala, many kitchens are in apartments 15–25 years old where owners want to update the layout and finishes. In chalets in Mijas Pueblo and inland complexes, demand tends to be larger in scope, typically including opening the kitchen to the living area and a complete update of installations and cabinetry.

Open-plan kitchens in Mijas properties

Open-plan kitchens are the most requested layout in Mijas, particularly in apartments where the original kitchen was closed off from the dining area. Before proposing this solution, we assess structural feasibility at the site visit — checking whether the wall to be removed is load-bearing and what reinforcement is required. In most Mijas Costa apartments, the opening is feasible and completely transforms the perception of space, particularly when the property has sea or garden views.

We work while you're away

A significant proportion of Mijas property owners are non-resident. We coordinate access, manage all trades and keep the owner informed with photos and regular updates throughout the renovation. Autonomous coordination is particularly relevant in kitchen renovations, where installation sequencing and furniture delivery timelines require ongoing management that the owner cannot handle remotely.

A kitchen is the renovation with the highest return in a Costa del Sol home: it concentrates plumbing, electrics, ventilation and bespoke joinery into a few square metres, so it demands precise planning. We redesign the layout to gain working area, open the kitchen to the living room where the partition allows it, and fit Silestone quartz, Dekton or porcelain worktops suited to the coastal climate. Our own team, a 5-year guarantee and project management in Spanish and English.

The three decisions that shape the project

The worktop. Silestone quartz offers consistency and low maintenance; Dekton and porcelain withstand heat, scratching and sunlight, making them the choice for islands and kitchens opening onto a terrace; granite and marble bring natural character but need periodic sealing.

Opening up to the living room. Not every partition can be removed: if it is load-bearing a beam or lintel calculated by an engineer is required, and in apartment blocks, formal authorisation.

The island. It means running plumbing and electrics through the floor, which usually requires a raised screed or a raised access floor, and that has to be decided before levelling.

On the coast there are two further checks: ventilation and extraction, to prevent damp and condensation caused by salt air, and the contracted electricity supply — a kitchen with an induction hob, oven and dishwasher may require an increase from 3.45 to 5.75 kW.

A full kitchen renovation usually takes 3 to 5 weeks, depending on the wet trades and the lead time for the worktop and bespoke units. The 5-year guarantee covers labour and installations, not just the manufacturer's materials.

The step-by-step process, the cabinet and appliance brands and the full schedule are set out in the guide to kitchen renovation on the Costa del Sol.

Renovating in Mijas: local context

Renovating in Mijas is unlike anywhere else on the Costa del Sol, because Mijas is really three places in one. There's the whitewashed mountain village clinging to the Sierra, with its protected pueblo aesthetic; there's Las Lagunas, the busy urban and commercial hub next to Fuengirola; and there's the 12-kilometre coastal strip of Mijas Costa, dotted with urbanisations like Calahonda and Riviera del Sol where close to half the residents are British or Nordic. At Costa del Sol Reformas we've delivered projects delivered across the Costa del Sol reading those differences: modernising a 2000s-boom apartment is nothing like restoring a traditional village home. Our own in-house team, a 5-year guarantee and project management in Spanish and English keep your renovation moving from the first quote to the final handover.

Where we work: Mijas Pueblo, La Cala de Mijas, Calahonda (Sitio de Calahonda), Riviera del Sol, Las Lagunas, El Coto.
